"The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?"
[On the New Jersey Turnpike earlier today, “D” and I spy a De Lorean, secured to a trailer, towed by some asshole in a black SUV. Flabbergasted, I fumble for my camera while D maintains a steady speed parallel to the fabled vehicle of our hallowed 80s past. The following conversation occurs.]
D: Shit, you don’t see those things anymore.
Me: Well, I think they only made about 10,000 of them or so, right? [Actually, 8,500 were made; 6,000 are estimated to still exist.]
D: De Loreans were awesome. Have you ever heard of the Golden De Lorean?
Me: [thoroughly cowed by the idea of a Golden De Lorean] No.
D: There’s only a couple of ‘em. Rare as shit.
[We both stare in rapt fascination, as if in the presence of a biblical artifact of some kind.]
D:They were real fucking fast, you know?
Me: Yeah.
[Awed silence]
Me: Like, 88 miles per hour, right?
D: Shit, you don’t see those things anymore.

Should you ever get totally lost and end up in Keswick, England there is a Cars of The Star Museum with one of the Deloreans used in one of the Back To The Future films. Actually upon closer inspection it was only ever used to provide transport for Michael.J.Fox to the premier of BttF III. I paid to go and see this. Nice.
robot, i'm curious about this Cars of the Star museum. Is it just one star, and is that star Michael J Fox? i suppose a whole museum celebrating the vehicles of MJF - his Ferrari from The Secret of My Suce$$, his Humvee from Casualties of War, his moped from Family Ties - would be awesome and necessary. book me a flight, I'm on my way.
